How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

26th May 2026

Dental implants are often described as a permanent solution to tooth loss – and while that’s broadly true, it requires a little more explanation to be genuinely useful. There are two components to consider: the implant itself, and the crown that sits on top of it. They behave differently over time, and understanding that distinction will give you a much clearer picture of what you’re actually investing in.

The short answer is that the titanium implant post, once it has successfully integrated with the jawbone, can last decades – and in many cases, a lifetime. The crown is a different matter. Like a natural tooth, it’s subject to daily wear and will typically need replacing after 10 to 15 years. That isn’t a failure of treatment – it’s routine maintenance, and it’s considerably less involved than the original procedure.

Clinical studies consistently report success rates of over 95% at the ten-year mark, making dental implants one of the most predictable and well-evidenced treatments in modern dentistry.

The implant post – designed to last

The implant itself is a small titanium screw that’s placed into the jawbone to replicate the function of a natural tooth root. Titanium is used for a specific reason: it’s biocompatible, meaning the bone grows around it and fuses to it through a process called osseointegration. Once that integration is complete – typically after three to six months – the implant becomes a stable, load-bearing part of your jaw.

Implants placed in the 1980s are still functioning today. That’s not marketing – it reflects the documented long-term performance of the treatment when it’s correctly planned, placed, and looked after. For patients who want to understand more about the procedure itself, our dental implants page covers the full process in detail.

The crown – what wears over time

The crown is the visible, tooth-shaped restoration that attaches to the implant via a small connector called an abutment. It’s usually made from porcelain or zirconia and is colour-matched to your surrounding teeth.

Crowns are durable, but they’re not indestructible. Over ten to fifteen years of daily use – chewing, biting, the minor stresses of normal life – surface wear accumulates. The crown may chip, the colour may shift slightly, or the fit may become less precise as the surrounding tissues age. When that happens, replacing the crown is a relatively straightforward procedure. The implant post underneath almost always remains intact.

What determines how long your implant lasts

Osseointegration quality

The long-term stability of an implant depends first on how well it integrates with the bone. Bone density, the health of the implant site, and precision of placement all play a role. This is why a thorough assessment before treatment – including 3D imaging in more complex cases – isn’t a formality. It’s the foundation of a predictable outcome.

Gum health and oral hygiene

The most common reason implants fail after successful osseointegration is peri-implantitis – a bacterial infection of the tissue surrounding the implant, comparable to gum disease around a natural tooth. Left untreated, it causes progressive bone loss that can eventually compromise the implant’s stability.

The good news is that peri-implantitis is largely preventable. Brushing twice daily, cleaning between the implant and adjacent teeth with interdental brushes, and attending regular appointments with your dental hygienist are the most effective things you can do to protect your investment long-term.

Smoking

Smoking significantly impairs the healing process and reduces blood supply to the gum tissue, which increases both the risk of implant failure during osseointegration and the likelihood of peri-implantitis developing later. The evidence on this is consistent. We’d always discuss smoking status during your consultation and provide honest guidance on how it affects suitability and long-term prognosis.

Bruxism

Patients who grind or clench their teeth place considerable repetitive force on the implant and crown. Over time, this can cause micro-fractures in the crown, loosen the abutment, or place abnormal stress on the bone around the implant. If bruxism is a factor, a custom-made night guard is a straightforward way to protect the restoration while you sleep.

Implant position

Implants placed in the back of the mouth – where chewing forces are greatest – experience more mechanical stress than those in the anterior region. This doesn’t mean posterior implants are less suitable; it means the case design and crown material need to account for those forces. Position also influences how easy the area is to clean, which has implications for long-term maintenance.

Systemic health

Certain medical conditions and medications can affect bone density and healing. Patients with well-controlled diabetes, for example, can be excellent implant candidates – but the management of their condition matters. Osteoporosis, immunosuppressive medications, and a history of radiation therapy to the jaw are all factors that require careful assessment. We take a thorough medical history before any treatment recommendation is made.

How implants compare to the alternatives

For patients considering their options for replacing a missing tooth, the comparison is worth understanding clearly.

A dental bridge can last ten to fifteen years, but it needs the healthy teeth either side to be prepared and crowned to support it. Once those teeth are prepared, that’s permanent. Bridges also don’t address bone loss in the jaw – without a root stimulating the bone, resorption continues underneath.

Dentures typically need replacing every five to eight years and can shift over time as the jaw changes shape. They restore function and aesthetics, but they don’t replicate the stability of a fixed restoration. Our denture clinic offers modern solutions for patients where implants aren’t appropriate.

Dental implants are the only tooth replacement option that replicates both the root and the crown – and crucially, the only one that preserves jawbone by stimulating it the way a natural tooth does. For patients who are suitable candidates, this is a significant long-term advantage.

Are you a suitable candidate?

Most healthy adults are suitable for dental implants. The key requirements are sufficient bone volume at the implant site, healthy gums, and good general health. Where bone loss has occurred – as is common when a tooth has been missing for some time – a bone grafting procedure may be recommended first. This adds time to the treatment process but doesn’t prevent successful outcomes.

If you’ve been told in the past that you’re not a candidate for implants, it’s worth getting a second assessment. Advances in implant planning and bone augmentation techniques have expanded the range of patients who can be successfully treated.

For patients with multiple missing teeth, it’s also worth exploring All-on-4 – a treatment that supports a full arch of teeth on just four strategically placed implants, avoiding the need for bone grafting in many cases.
